Darian wins his first Futures singles title

After only two years on the Pro Circuit, Barbados’ Darian King (20) won his first Futures singles title in Manzanillo, Mexico over the past weekend.

It was third time lucky for Darian, having lost in singles finals on two previous occasions – in Claremont, California in September 2011 and in Joplin, Missouri in July 2012.

King, the #5 seed (current ATP ranking #624), beat the #7 seeded Alexandre Schnitman of Brazil who retired while trailing 6-4, 5-0 in the second set of the final.

In the quarterfinals King also beat his doubles partner Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador, seeded #2 (ATP ranking #437) in three close sets 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(2) before beating Venezuela’s Luis Martinez 6-1, 6-3 in the semis in a rain delayed match played over two days.

King will play the Mexico F10 and F11 Futures in Manzanillo over the next two weeks.
