The boy’s team of Darian King, Jackson Kerr and Kenton Gamble narrowly missed progressing to the final of the Junior Davis Cup competition being played in Honduras this past week.
Having placed first in their Round Robin group of three following consecutive 2-1 victories against Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda, they then beat Dominican Republic in the quarters 2-1.
In the semi-finals, they then came up against unseeded Cuba.
Jackson lost his match against the Cuban #2, 1-6, 2-6, but Darian beat the Cuban #1 player 6-3, 6-2.
It was then down to the doubles – Jackson and Darian won the first set, but then narrowly lost to the same two players 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, thereby giving the Cubans a 2-1 victory and a place in the final which they then won against home team Honduras 2-1.
In the playoffs for 3rd and 4th places, Barbados then played the Bahamas and again lost 1-2, having been 1-1 prior to losing the doubles match.
Following two losses in their group in the girls’ Federation Cup event, the team of Alyssa Fuentes, Jodie Watson and Kareika Wharton fought well to get into the playoffs for the 9th-12th places with a good win against Aruba.
However, in their next playoff against Honduras, they did not perform so well and lost badly 0-3, followed by another 0-3 loss against Guatemala in the final play off.
The final positions ended with the boys placing 4th out of 16 in their event and the girls 12th out of 16 in their event.
Well done to all players for their performances, with special mention to Darian King who won his five singles matches without losing a set.
